Planning ahead for your Illinois Vacation

In Illinois, you don’t have to go very far to find amazing weekend opportunities and week-long destinations.

It’s a surprise, though, that Americans have a hard time taking their hard-earned paid time off. Research shows that more than half of Americans (52%) fail to use all of their days off, creating a stock pile of 705 million unused vacation days annually. Illinois is one of the worst states in the U.S. when it comes to our employees using their PTO, with over 25 million total unused days in our state alone. Many times, these days do not roll over and are simply forfeited. You wouldn’t give your boss back a portion of your paycheck at the end of the year, would you? So why is it any different with your earned time off?

Statistics indicate that when Americans take time to sit down and actually plan their vacation days at the beginning of the year, 53 percent will use all of their time off.

That is why I am encouraging Illinoisans to pull their calendars out and plan their travels in advance of National Plan Your Vacation Day, which falls on Tuesday, January 29. My wife and I completed this exercise last week and I’m proud to say that we will both use every day of PTO provided by our employers. Not only does this provide us both with excitement for our upcoming trips, but research shows that taking a vacation improves relationships, fosters better health and increases your productivity at work.

I can’t stress enough the importance of using your vacation days to travel and experience the many exciting destinations and unique hotels throughout the state who are excited to welcome you.

Ready to start planning? Our colleagues at the U.S. Travel Association have an interactive online tool to help you map out your PTO to ensure you use all of your days in 2019.
